Building an Email List

Learn different ways to acquire email subscribers in Quotient.

There are several ways to build your email subscriber list in Quotient. Let's explore the available methods:

1. Shopify Integration

Quotient automatically syncs with your Shopify store to maintain a unified subscriber list:

  • Any customer who opts into marketing emails in Shopify will automatically appear as a subscriber in Quotient
  • When Quotient collects new email subscribers (e.g., through forms), we create corresponding customer records in Shopify
  • Changes to subscription status are synchronized between both platforms

This two-way sync ensures your email subscriber data stays consistent across both systems.

2. Website Forms

The most effective way to grow your email list is by using website using popups and other types of forms. These popups and forms typically offer visitors an incentive (like a discount code) in exchange for their email address.

Popups and forms are highly customizable and can be designed to match your brand's look and feel. You can:

  • Create multi-step form flows
  • Customize timing and targeting
  • Collect additional subscriber properties
  • A/B test different offers

3. Manual Upload and Quick Add

You can manually upload subscribers from a CSV file on the Email Subscribers page. This is useful if you have a list of email addresses you want to add to your subscriber list.

In order to upload subscribers, you'll need to have a CSV file with the following columns:

  • email (required, must be the first column in the CSV)
  • firstName (optional)
  • lastName (optional)

You may also choose to add additional properties to your subscribers using a subset of the custom properties you've created for your business. In order to include these properties, you'll need to add a column for each property in your CSV file. This column name must match the property ID exactly and the value must be a valid value for the property type. For the supported data types, you must adhere to the following rules:

  • True/False: must be true or false
  • Text: must be a valid string
  • Number: must be a valid number
  • Options: must match one of your configured options in both value and case

Finally, you may optioanlly set the status of your new subscribers to one of the following values:

  • PENDING - The subscriber has not yet confirmed their subscription. Note, this will cause the subscriber to be sent a confirmation email.
  • SUBSCRIBED - The subscriber will receive emails from your business
  • UNSUBSCRIBED - The subscriber has opted out of receiving emails from your business

If the status column is not included in your CSV file, or otherwise if the value for a subscriber is not set, the subscriber will be set to SUBSCRIBED by default.

If you'd like to quickly add or update a single subscriber, you'll be able to do so via the Quick Add button on the Email Subscribers page.

Best Practices

Regardless of how you collect email subscribers, remember to:

  1. Always obtain explicit consent before adding someone to your email list
  2. Consider using double opt-in to ensure high-quality subscribers
  3. Collect relevant subscriber properties to enable better segmentation
  4. Make it easy for subscribers to manage their preferences and unsubscribe

By following these practices and utilizing the available collection methods, you can build a healthy, engaged email subscriber base for your marketing campaigns.
